| Three
clocks, facing north, east and south, on the new library are donations
from two former Hillsdale
residents. Jim McCall and Gene Herbener, who formerly served on the
library
board, donated the money to roughly cover the $16,000 needed to pay for
the time pieces. The two donors have had a long and storied history in
the city of
Hillsdale. McCall, who now resides in Grand Rapids, owned McCall Lumber in Hillsdale for many, many years — and served on the Hillsdale County Community Foundation Board of Directors. He was also a longtime member of the Presbyterian Church. Herbener, who passed away on 6 December, 2008, was a chemistry professor at Hillsdale College for more than 30 years. He also served as the library board’s chairman. Previous teaching positions included his favorite high school, Fennville High. |
